Through shadow,
To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

I'm back!

Journal Entry: Sun May 11, 2014, 5:43 PM

:iconicaron:

So! It's been far too long since I've submitted anything... which doesn't mean that I haven't been drawing. Mainly I was just doing a bunch of small things for RPs here and there that built up, and I'd been waiting for the drive to finish a big project before submitting them. Never came, so here comes the onslaught of characters and such! Not that that is a big problem really.

Goodness though, it is funny how time seems fly past. A whole semester and I barely realised it... whoops...
:iconzecoraannoyedplz:
Well, here's hoping I can be a bit more active here now! Glad to be back!

Also might try to knock out a bunch of over-due message replies. Prepare yourself for old replies. XD

I'm rather eccentric, fairly reserved and distant, shy even, unless I know you. Currently a fourth year undergraduate student of History and Library Science, soon to be MLIS student and studying Conservator of antiquarian books of all shapes, ages, and sizes from the earliest illuminated manuscripts to turn of the century first editions. My own ever growing private collection spans six centuries of print. ^^

Very much the bibliophile... heck, even a bibliopole from time to time. Want assistance finding a rare or unusual book? Need help with research? Look no further! I also tend to be a colorful character, usually dressed in pastels with a preference for yellows and pinks, though with a definite trend towards earth tones as well. You'll also seldom see me without a cabled sweater as well, or a sweater vest, or a sweater whatever... I do like sweaters.

I'm quite friendly, so feel free to comment or message me. ^^
My skype ID is "Tamhais", and you'll find me on most of the time.
I'm also quite active of SecondLife through the Trotsdale, Roanoak, Fo:E, and Manelands RP sims. My username is Grypha and the screen name is Green Tea. Send me a message any time there, I'll always respond.

The Haunted Mansion, heck, just about anything Disney really is ripe for crossover with ponies in one way or another. Keep at it! Make all the crossovers I say! Hehe. And no worries, I'm used to loud noises~

Dear God, the sweet girl reading this is kind and I'm proud of her. Please help her live life to the fullest and bless her in her chosen field. Now, you're on the clock. In 9 minutes something will make you happy. Please share this with 15 girls you love. Remember, only for *girls*. If I don't get this back I'm obviously not a close friend. Now, I have a game for you, it's been played since 1977. Once you read this, you have to send it to 15 people. Your next 5 days will be like this: Day 1 - you will wake up to the biggest shock of your life. Day 2 - you will cross paths with an old friend you have missed. Day 3 - you will find yourself with a lot of money. Day 4 - your day will be perfect. Day 5 - the love of your life will kiss you. ....if you don't forward this, your next 5 days will be the exact opposite. Don't break this. Send it to 14 friends in 10 minutes. It's not that hard. Whoever sent this to you must care about you

Hey Professor - Euclid's 'Optics'
I don't suppose you have one of those laying around...

Euclid's Optics! I admit, that's one title that I don't have in my library at the moment, though I did see one recently at a local bibliopole ( Way out of my price range! Else-wise I would have purchased it in a heartbeat).

In general, Euclid's works are staggeringly expensive when it comes to early or mid antiquarian copies- anything from before 1850 in readable condition won't be ANY less than a few thousand dollars US, and usually, well over $10,000 in my experience. Modern and late antiquarian copies are the way to read Euclid in physical print, but outside of facsimile printings even those can be outside the budget of the average collector. Euclid's Elements tends to be a bit more accessible than Optics, but they -can- be purchased if you have the drive and resources to tack them down. I believe there is a modern printing of Elements available through Amazon and other book stores, but I can't think of any for Optics outside of the still fairly pricey Arabic edition, which both could be found in libraries I'm sure.

But, not to despair! There are numerous transcribed and digitised versions of Euclid's works, as well a great number of scholarly interpretations of the work available online. If you have access to the JSTOR database ( many research universities offer access to their students, though you can also pay for access I believe ) they have an article by Richard Tobin (1990) that details Optics quite nicely. Past that, Cornell University has published an earlier translation of it from 1943 and has it available on public access through their Department of Mathematics. ( www.math.cornell.edu/~web1600/… )

Anyway, hope that helps if you were looking for it! XD

Thank you for such a thoughtful and generous answer! I take back everything I ever said about literary students.

'Optics' contains ancient ideas which are entirely absent from our present reality - it's the ideas I'm interested in - not the pages. If you can put me in touch with someone who has read this book, I would be even deeper in your debt.

The Homeric Greeks lacked a word for blue - yet we hold this illusion up as a primary color. The extramission theories of vision weren't fully eradicated from the common mind until about 150 years ago - Aristotle deserves much of the credit for this, and his legacy is neatly represented by the poem you wrote to accompany your favorites gallery.

In the spirit of gratitude and reciprocation (and maybe mischief) I'm going to respond to that poem of yours in kind. Don't worry about it though - ReasonBear hugs are good for you.

Hehe, my pleasure, truly! This sort of thing is something I quite enjoy. You may find us students of the humanities to be a very wide and varied lot... though, given my specific pursuits, I tend to fall outside the spectrum of most!

I admit, while I have read a large part of the text of Optics, very little of it actually had much for me in the way of meaning- given I lack the basis of understanding in the realm of Optics and Physics. I'd venture I wouldn't begin to properly understand it without having at least a year of university level courses on those subjects! All the same though, what I can appreciate is the background of the work itself and how it fits into the scheme of historical science. A truly remarkable work it is too in that context!

As for a person who might have read and truly understood the book, I do not know any personally, no. But academically? I have heard of a few who might have! Harvard University operates what they call the 'Harvard Quantum Optics Center', which is a leading research center in the field of optics using quantum mechanics and a myriad of semi-classical disciplines to delve deeper into it. I'd contact Karl Coleman there, he's the head administrator and could very likely direct you to a Professor on the Scientific Board or in the department there most likely to have the time to answer questions or discuss the topic with you. ( hqoc.harvard.edu/administratio… )

Alternatively, if you're looking for somewhere less ah... lofty and busy, you might try contacting Professors from Optics departments at other research universities such as Dr. Nicholas P. Bigelow or Dr. Joseph H. Eberly from the University of Rochester. ( www.optics.rochester.edu/peopl… ) Hope that helps point you in the right direction!

Ohhh, the poem by my favourites gallery! While I would love to take credit for that, it actually comes from the first novel I ever read, many years ago. Mattimeo, by the late Brian Jacques. I usually like to put things like that there without a label to see if anyone recognises them, always leads to fun conversations I find! I do see what you mean there though... that's a light in which I had not thought to interpret that poem, and yet... it works quite well, and I'd still love to hear what you might have to say on it~

Hugs are always a great thing! ^^
