Fifth Element - Woodcut Colophon

Description

One of my focuses of study has been the history of the book, particularly in the early years of printing from the time of the invention of the Gutenberg press around ~1440 on to about the end of the 16th century when printing really takes a turn towards the more advanced. During that time period, independent publishers always had a printer's mark ( or Colophon ) at the front or back of the book that identified them, rather like Heraldry but less regulated. Pictorial colophons have survived with many publishers to modern day, but after the 16th century they gradually began giving way to simpler marks and text. Enough history though, needless to say I adore these old woodcut illustrations, and wanted to try my hoof at them! This was for a good friend of mine, Fifth--Element using his character. Took awhile to do all the details, but I think it came out pretty well! Merged with the pony style surprisingly easily.

I will be offering this sort of thing for commission shortly!

So I wonder why you chose dragons to adorn the herald. Any particular reason why?
